At Critter Country, we know how important it is to keep your pets happy, healthy, and mentally stimulated. Enrichment activities are a fantastic way to provide mental and physical exercise for your pets, strengthen your bond, and keep boredom at bay. Here are some fun, simple DIY enrichment ideas you can try with your furry friends this weekend:

For Dogs

  1. DIY Snuffle Mat
Snuffle mats are great for dogs that love to sniff and forage. You can make one by tying strips of fleece fabric onto a rubber sink mat (the kind with holes). Hide small treats between the fabric strips and watch your pup go wild searching for them!
  2. Frozen Treat Puzzle
Fill a muffin tin with dog-safe treats or kibble, then pour low-sodium chicken broth or plain water over the treats. Freeze it and give it to your dog to enjoy as a cool and engaging snack.
  3. Cardboard Box Adventure
Take an old cardboard box and fill it with crumpled paper, a few toys, and some treats. Let your dog dig through the box to uncover the treasures!

For Cats

  1. Interactive Toy Box
Take a small cardboard box and cut several holes in the sides, just large enough for your cat’s paw to fit through. Place a toy or treat inside and watch as your cat figures out how to “catch” it.
  2. DIY Cat Wands
Tie feathers, ribbons, or bells to a string and attach it to a sturdy stick. Move the wand around to mimic prey and encourage your cat’s natural hunting instincts.
  3. Treat Rolling Game
Recycle an empty toilet paper roll by folding one end shut, adding treats inside, and folding the other end. Your cat will love batting it around to get the treats out!

Enrichment Tips for Both Dogs and Cats:

  • Always supervise your pets during these activities to ensure their safety.
  • Use treats sparingly to avoid overfeeding, or substitute a portion of their regular meal.
  • Rotate activities to keep things fresh and exciting for your pets.
